Letters to Santa – Automating Joy to the World, At Scale

It’s that time of year again. The time when the world’s largest order fulfillment operation experiences its heaviest load. No, not Amazon – we’re talking about Santa Claus, Inc. – the largest logistics company in the world, with a 24-hour global delivery window at peak load. This year is different, however. Earlier this year, Saint Nick clicked on an ad on his Facebook feed, one promising a digital nomad lifestyle through automating his business. Sick of the Arctic weather and the stress of traveling, the thought of sitting on a beach in Thailand – while still bringing joy to children around the world – was enticing. Santa paid for the course and applied the principles of process automation, task decomposition…

Retaining Community Knowledge on the Slack Free Tier with a Slack bot

“There is a lot of valuable information in this Slack, but whenever I come back to find it, it’s gone because of the 10,000 message limit. Can we move this community to Discord, which has persistent message history?” That message, from a community member in the Zeebe Slack, triggered a DevRel project that resulted in the Slack Archivist – a Slack bot that allows valuable conversations to be archived from the community Slack to a dedicated searchable topic in our Discourse-powered Forum. The Problem Slack is ubiquitous. You probably have it open right now, and are in several different Slack teams. We use Slack internally at Camunda, on a paid plan, and when it came time to stand something up…

The Camunda Holiday Reading List 2020

Who doesn’t love a good book? The cold, dark and grey weather — at least in the Northern Hemisphere — is the perfect excuse to throw an extra log on the fire and sit down with a good book, and perhaps a glass of Glühwein.  With the holidays ahead, we asked our colleagues across Camunda to share their reading recommendations — from books to sharpen your skills, improve your code and inspire your leadership, to reads that will make you stop and think about personal development. We hope you enjoy these books as much as we have: Books to hone your Engineering Knowledge  Chris Zell, Software Developer Learning Chaos Engineering: Discovering and Overcoming System Weaknesses through Experimentation Chaos Engineering: System…

Camunda’s 2021 Predictions

The past year has been a wild ride. From remote work, homeschooling and pets on Zoom calls, to almost everybody discovering a surprising talent for baking.  Banana bread aside, 2020 has been a milestone year for technology. One where the world realized that end-to-end process automation, powered by agile, scalable technologies, and combined with IT and business collaboration, are key ingredients for the new decade. So, what else do we think will be on the cards in 2021? Continuous Delivery, microservices, RPA, new emerging uses for process automation or even more uses for process audit data? Here’s a taste of the trends we believe will emerge in the coming year: An RPA Headache is brewing Companies like Deutsche Telekom have…

Intuit: empowering SMBs with Process Automation

Small and medium-sized businesses face the same challenges as their bigger peers when customer and process numbers and, ultimately, revenue start to increase. However, unlike multinational enterprises and corporates, SMBs often lack the financial means to set up sophisticated IT departments to properly implement workflow and process automation. This is where Intuit comes in. Intuit provides software solutions for SMBs that empower them to automate their workflows using simple forms and templates, thus digitizing their businesses. This approach quickly pays off for its customers. In fact, Deloitte’s Connected Small Businesses US report reveals the most digitally advanced small businesses in the United States are more likely to create jobs and manage to significantly increase both revenue and top-line growth. At…

Speeding Up RPA through Behavioural Observation

As more businesses leverage RPA to address the pain-points associated with individual components in legacy systems, it’s worth considering how to best introduce and integrate these tools to your advantage. At CamundaCon LIVE 2020.2, Andres Jimenez Ramirez from the Universidad de Sevilla, and Hajo A. Reijers from Utrecht University, explained how taking a human-centered approach to RPA implementation pays dividends in the future.  Their research explores how RPA implementations typically mimic the behavior of human employees to automate manual tasks. In order to initially introduce RPA tools, most commercial platforms rely on a manual analysis to identify the tasks suitable for RPA automation. However, manual analysis is hugely time-consuming. It does not only involve the analysis of documentation, it is…

Creating a Frictionless Enterprise: Five Fundamentals

What if you could remove all of the friction in your enterprise, allowing for a streamlined, perfectly aligned flow of information across both internal and external stakeholders? Manuel Sevilla — Chief Digital Officer of Business Services at Capgemini — recently shared his thoughts on this topic at CamundaCon LIVE 2020.2, identifying the framework businesses must adopt to embrace the frictionless attitude. Let’s take a closer look at the five fundamentals enterprises should consider when trying to increase efficiency, get to market faster, and provide users with an enhanced experience.  1. Hyperscale Automation To improve your enterprise’s efficiency, focus on delivering a touchless process — one that uses automation in a way that makes it easier for the end users (and…

Virtual Conference Swag

One of the things that I love about being a Developer Advocate is attending and speaking at conferences. I loved that as a developer – in fact, I first met (now, fellow-) Camunda Developer Advocate Niall Deehan at the Camunda booth when speaking at NDC Oslo, in 2017. A essential part of the conference experience is getting some cool swag. My wardrobe is literally 70% conference and swag t-shirts. But as a Developer Advocate, I get to be one of the people handing out cool swag (as well as still snagging some cool stuff while I’m there). The recent move to online events has changed the world – creating some constraints, but also opening some novel possibilities: No more travelling…

Should data be embedded in business processes? It depends!

In October, I had the opportunity to lead a session at Camunda Unconference. This was a rather unique event, with an “unconference” format designed specifically for the community; it was most conducive to great peer-to-peer discussions, and exchange of ideas, experiences and learnings. What was also interesting was that the topics for the sessions were sourced from within the community, and each topic was voted in to a final shortlist. The sessions themselves were discussion-led, to encourage collaboration and creativity. Data in Process I had voted for “Data in Process” as one of the topics; it has always intrigued me, and needless to say, I was thrilled at the opportunity to lead the session! I have been consulting for customers building…
