From Process Automation Pioneers to the Leader in Agentic Orchestration
Started in Berlin in 2008 with a bold bet on open-source process automation.

2008
Camunda is Founded
Jakob Freund and Bernd Ruecker found a business process management (BPM) consulting company. Over the next four years, Camunda builds a consulting customer base of more than 250 customers.
2009
The first edition of Praxishandbuch BPMN (later Real-Life BPMN) is published
HANSER publishes the first edition of Jakob and Bernd’s book distilling their experience with BPMN and process automation.
2013
Camunda BPM is launched
The Camunda BPM (later Camunda) product is launched to move the BPM space forward with a focus on open infrastructure, tools, and knowledge.
2018
Camunda hits 150+ enterprise customers
2018
Camunda completes Series A funding round
Camunda announces its first outside funding round with a €25 million investment from Highland Europe.
2019
The fourth edition of Real-Life BPMN is published
Jakob and Bernd update their handbook for working with the BPMN standard to reflect the rising popularity of microservices architectures.
2021
Camunda completes Series B funding round
Camunda expands outside funding with an €82 million investment led by Insight Partners, plus additional investment from Highland Europe.

Practical Process Automation is published
O’Reilly publishes Bernd’s book, which provides a framework for designing complex processes in modern architectures to deliver true business value.

Camunda hits 500+ enterprise customers

Camunda Announces Publication of New Enterprise Process Orchestration Book.
Published by Wiley and co-authored by Bernd Ruecker, Camunda co-founder and chief technologist, and Leon Strauch, principal practice strategist at Camunda, the book gives practical advice for adopting process orchestration and automation to increase business agility, speed, and innovation.

I live in a country and city where unfortunately diversity isn’t prevalent, so I struggle with finding opportunities to immerse myself and learn about diversity in an ‘everyday setting’.
