Meet Will Lewis

Let’s start with the basics

What is your name and your role at Camunda? (Sales, CSM, ADR, RevOps, etc.)?

My name is Will Lewis, and I am currently the director of global account development at Camunda.

Your path to Sales

How did you get started in this field, and what experiences shaped your approach to customer engagement and relationship-building?

My journey to tech sales wasn’t very linear. I joined the Australian Army straight out of school, where I was fortunate to deploy to both Timor-Leste and Afghanistan. I left the army to travel the world, but without planning ahead, I became homeless and jobless for a period of time (lesson learned!) I spent weeks walking into workplaces with my CV in hand, eventually getting a job scrubbing dishes in a restaurant for 10 hours a day. I groundd it out, quickly moving to front-of-house, then managing the bar.

I later discovered a startup company whose mission aligned with my values perfectly, so I knocked on the founder’s door one Sunday morning. I became the first full-time employee, cold-calling from my founder and CEO’s kitchen table, selling SaaS and professional services. Four years later we became the fastest growing company in the Asia-Pacific!

Discovering Camunda 

How did you learn about Camunda, and what motivated you to join the team?

I was looking for a company with great values, strong growth potential, and believed in developing their employees. I reached out to some former colleagues from my MuleSoft days who had already joined Camunda with only positive things to say. What I’ve found is a fast-paced environment that values transparency, initiative, ownership and accountability. I’ve not looked back since!

Life in a remote sales world

Working in sales remotely can look different everywhere. What does a typical day look like for you, and how do you stay connected with customers and teammates?

I genuinely believe that I am able to do my best work remotely. I live in (not-so) sunny Scotland, with my wife and black Labrador, Wally. I am able to take control of my day, going to the gym in the morning, taking Wally for a walk during sunlight hours, and getting my job done without having to worry about the commute. There’s also opportunity to work from anywhere that we love to take advantage of, travelling and working from abroad as well as at home.

Family road trip from Scotland to Wales. I worked from an Airbnb to enjoy the best of both worlds.

That said, there is no substitute for human connection. I am super intentional about setting up calls with my direct team and the broader company. 

I am passionate about building healthy, happy, and high-performing teams, and believe an intentional wellbeing program is central to this. So you’ll often find me at the gym, on hikes, or practicing yoga.

Proud moments

What’s a recent project, win, or customer success story that made you proud to be part of Camunda’s GTM team?

My proudest moments are when we win as a team. I have been part of a bunch of cross-functional projects including members from across the company: product, presales, sales, marketing, field productivity, revenue operations, and more. Some examples are building a comprehensive use case library, executing new campaigns and sales plays,  and launching full go-to-market Pipeline Days. Also, it’s always great to see members of my team progress in their career and promote into new roles where they can extend their impact in Camunda, and I’m proud to have seen this career progression accelerate!

Collaboration and culture

How would you describe the culture within the sales org, what makes it special, or what do you appreciate most about your teammates?

For the account development team specifically, I would describe our team as curious, self-sufficient, and lead with a growth-mindset. I am proud to lead this team!

More broadly for Camunda’s Sales and GTM organization, I think we’re ambitious high achievers who genuinely care about each other’s success. We celebrate wins together, learn from losses together, and focus on solving real problems for our customers.

Growth and learning

What’s one lesson, mindset, or habit that’s helped you succeed in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment?

“70% delivered on time is better than 100% delivered late.” That aligns with our value of iteration. The ambition to do big, creative things is great, but things may not always work out. Failure is completely fine, as long as you stay focused on the outcomes you’re trying to achieve, persevere, and find a new way.

I could also call this grit, determination, “do what it takes” mentality, and I believe this applies to all areas of life. Also, “be a good human,” “the mission comes first,” and “teamwork makes the dream work.”

Personal passion

What excites you the most outside of your work?

Outside of work, I’m an avid traveller (60 countries and counting!), I’m a foodie, I love live music, I love new experiences, I love spending quality time with my friends and family. I love making an impact in other people’s lives, for example volunteering after natural disasters to help people rebuild their lives.

Career advice  

Any advice for someone looking to build a career in sales, customer success, or revOps?  

Don’t let fear of the unknown hold you back. Potential is more important than experience. Be ambitious, be yourself! Fortune favors the brave!
