Businesses today often struggle with increasingly complex processes that span multiple systems.
Managing and changing such processes can be inefficient and time consuming. Fortunately, process orchestration offers a solution.
Read on as we highlight Camunda Platform users sharing in their own words on Peerspot how they’ve reduced the complexity of business process management, collaboration, as well as improvements in productivity overall.
The need to manage complex processes
PeerSpot members shared how Camunda helped them cope with complex processes.
According to Joscelyn J., an IT Solution Architect at a government agency, “[Camunda] allows business users to create, update, and execute complex workflows.” This is important for their team because of their project-oriented approach. Their developers turn the completed, now automated process over to the business and move on to the next project. They added, “When we reach a point where the solution is built and we are in an operational state, we prefer to have a tool that can be used by the business.”
As Joscelyn explained, it’s a huge boon for business users to be able to configure and personalize their solutions without requiring developers to do the work. “They should be flexible and autonomous in doing that,” she said, “[we] don’t necessarily have to have developers for that.” Instead, they can focus on other projects which frees up so much of their team’s time.
The CTO of Ank Platform, a financial services firm, likewise found that Camunda “is very good as a universal process orchestrator for complex business processes.” His team uses the platform for microservices, rather than human processes. He revealed, however, that they have thousands of processes happening every hour, and Camunda was able to capture the data for this throughput.
Ank Platform’s CTO also felt that Camunda’s Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) diagram was invaluable for breaking down complexity.
Regarding his company’s money transfer process, he said, they often deal with “a lot of unexpected errors and a lot of instability with this kind of system, and we are using Camunda in order to have clear flows.” With BPMN, meanwhile, the CTO is able to “show a flow to my business partner, and the business team can easily understand what’s going on. The technical team can understand what the implementation is, and we can model different errors and the process for recovering from these errors.”
This is just one of many ways that Camunda provides its users with functionality that helps them tackle complexity in business processes.
Saving time on process management
Managing processes can take a lot of time, particularly when dealing with adjustments along the way. Camunda users praised Camunda Platform in this context on PeerSpot. One Product Owner at an insurance company said, “It has definitely saved time. We could focus on improving Dev backups or CI/CD. We also improved a lot also with regard to implementing or POC’ing new features. We have much more time now to focus on new solutions that we can offer to our customer base.”
He offered additional detail, noting, “It’s easy to see how the process is configured. It’s more transparent for us to see how to change things, and it’s easier to transfer tasks from one person to another. In the past, you had to deal with the subject matter expert on a specific process and the handover took much longer. Nowadays, it’s much more fluid to understand the process and its implementation.”
Given the premium placed on IT staff time, Camunda’s ability to let people work more efficiently is a powerful benefit.
How process automation leads to improved productivity
By helping simplify the automation of complex processes and saving time, Camunda’s process orchestration capabilities can help make teams far more productive both in completing tasks and in working together. As Piotr M., a Digital Transformation Solution Manager at Altkom Software & Consulting, put it, “We noticed that the project team collaboration is more effective when we use a working process model.”
For Rodrigo C., a BPM Consultant at a tech services company, what mattered was Camunda’s developer-friendly nature. He mentioned that “Camunda Platform as a whole helps us to easily measure the life cycle of all the relevant processes. For example, Camunda Platform includes [tools] for business analysts, for process engine configuration, and modeling tools for developers. Then you have Optimize, which is helpful in managing processes and continuously improving on them.”
“It allows us to collaborate between areas,” said Marco L, a Business Process Manager at SEAD, a Brazilian government agency. “[Camunda] enables us to keep on working, remotely or not. It’s easy to model and easy to use. It’s a great tool for communicating at the beginning of a project.”
Camunda enabled a retailer to build reusable components that could be used in other projects, according to their Staff Software Engineer. This resulted in the ability to reuse 80 percent of what they had developed on Camunda Platform—a demonstrable gain in productivity. He said, “The microservices and the Connectors were reusable and that really reduced the development effort drastically for that use case.”
This user further commented on the value of Camunda’s integration with almost any language, product, and even human tasks. He shared, “It’s very seamless to integrate into existing systems. It doesn’t require you to rewrite a lot of your existing system. That’s where it really stands out.” Fast onboarding of new talent was part of the retailer’s productivity story, as well, with the Staff Software Engineer saying, “We have an engineer who joined us two weeks back and he has been onboarded. He’s able to make changes in the BPMN.”
Freeing employees from the work of orchestrating microservices was a productivity benefit noticed by Ank Platform’s CTO. He said, “By using Camunda, we could have the application process design, and we could quickly deploy the system to production and have the product early on the market. That was our biggest gain. We didn’t have engineers struggling to orchestrate microservices.”
As these experiences show, Camunda helps on multiple productivity fronts, including improved collaboration and faster time to market, and onboarding. Business processes can be challenging to manage. Process automation, as enabled and orchestration by Camunda Platform, helps with complexity and time-consuming process management tasks.
