Many recent mainstream media articles and popular books have raised alarms over anti-social algorithmic behavior, especially regarding machine learning and artificial intelligence. At CamundaCon LIVE 2020.2, we’re excited to introduce Dr. Micheal Kearns, professor in the Computer and Information Science department at the University of Pennsylvania, to discuss anti-social algorithms.

In his CamundaCon LIVE keynote, Dr Kearns will address concerns including leaks of sensitive personal data by predictive models, algorithmic discrimination as a side-effect of machine learning, and inscrutable decisions made by complex models. He’ll explain the explosion of recent research in areas such as differential privacy, algorithmic fairness and algorithmic game theory, forging a new science of socially aware algorithm design and attempt to place them in a broader societal context

His recent book, The Ethical Algorithm: The Science of Socially Aware Algorithm Design, co-authored with Aaron Roth, explores a set of principled solutions based on the emerging and exciting science of socially aware algorithm design. It explains how we can better embed human principles into machine code — without halting the advance of data-driven scientific exploration, and proposes a compelling vision for a future in which we can better protect humans from the unintended impacts of algorithms, while continuing to inspire advances in technology.

Dr Kearns is uniquely qualified to speak about the way algorithms are impacting our everyday lives, as founder of Penn’s Networked and Social Systems Engineering (NETS) program, and director of Penn’s Warren Center for Network and Data Sciences, as well as fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.
